What made you interested in pursuing a career in accounting?

As I was going through the IT section of auditing, I had a question for myself and for other people if they want to answer.  What made you interested in accounting and why did you choose it as a profession?  I actually grew around computers and IT in general, so I've actually been very interested in that side of the field.  I've enjoyed my IT and MIS related classes in school and thought they were very streamlined and informative.  But, somewhere along the way, I thought going the accounting route would be the best bet for my future.  I guess some of it was in fact job security.  You pretty much always have a need for accountants and it's a function that can't be replaced easily.  After taking my first accounting class, I didn't do too well haha, but I ended up enjoying it as a class.  I think my ultimate goal is finding a career that has a mixture of IT and accounting; something like IT auditing.  Having a career that contains a mixture of both of my interests would be the best option possible.  Although I think passing the CPA exam will help me open up more opportunities, I think I have to be more proactive and definitely find a field that interests me in the end by looking for those opportunities as they open up.  What are your thoughts?  Thanks.

I think I like organizing things, classifying them and sorting them.  I also like making publications and reporting, so perhaps its naturally a field that I'm inclined to pursue a career in.  I hope passing the CPA exams opens more doors, it sure makes life more interesting and fun that way.

I once tutored accounting in college and I believe that accounting is a subject either you get it or you don't. Either you understand the double entry method and why accounts are debited or credited or you don't. I have loved numbers since High School. I loved algebra, college algebra, and calculus. I took accounting in High School and immediately fell in LOVE!

There is just something about going through the accounting cycle all the way to the income statement and balance sheet and actually seeing your numbers balance! Call me crazy if you want, but I like it. After taking higher courses I realized I had a passion for tax. All of those tax laws may seem daunting to some, but I enjoy them. I enjoy knowing and helping clients understand these laws as well. J

I actually got a degree in Web Programming and Design before I changed to accounting. I thought a career in accounting would be dry and I love computers. When I took AIS (accounting information systems) I thought to myself, this could go somewhere! However, I did not have the cash to double major in accounting and IT.

Good luck!
