Came to USA after marriage on dependent visa. Joined at a CPA firm to voluntary the accounting and taxing work. Worked there for 18 months. CPA was not at all in my mind as my career. Was planning to learn software testing, take H1 visa and jump in to job which takes less time and less effort. It was that CPA for whom I worked suggested me that I should go for CPA certification as I am good in accounting. Then I thought about it not yet determined. But my husband determined that I should do CPA certification.
In the mean while many changes in my family life. We welcomed a baby girl. This gave me a long gap of almost 1 and half year even to think about my studies. All of a sudden I started gathering information about CPA and learnt that the first step towards it is get my education evaluated. Since I was planning to do it from Maryland, I had to do three requirement courses for which I took two semesters. As soon as my requirement courses were finished, I planned to go to my native country India for two months and then start CPA. But there was some thing else in store for me. Our work permit dates became current and I was asked not to go out of the country. Had to stay back and applied to Maryland CPA Board where by I got qualified.
Now started the real confusion. Which subject to choose, which review book to buy, how to study, how to organize my time with all family responsibilities, guests coming and going, with a 20 month old baby at home. At this stage I found this forum. I was so excited. Some suggested me to take FAR first and end with BEC. Some suggested me to buy Becker because it good and some suggested me to go for Yaeger because it is simple and easy to understand. Checked the prices of these review courses. Very expensive. I thought I cannot afford these.
At this stage I should mention a name, Keyur Patel. I messaged him explaining him about my financial situation, my education background. He advised me to go for Wiley CPA review book and Wiley Test Bank CD for my preparation which would cost only $120. He also suggested me to start with AUD. I felt good and I followed his advice.
I designed my own study plan. Read the book 3 times. First time to know whats inside the book and mark those areas where I feel tough and where there is a need to prepare notes. Second time try to understand the material, prepare the notes and concentrate on weaker areas. Finally third time to revise again to get better understanding.
I would apply for NTS after I finish my three readings and then open Wiley test bank CD. I gave more importance to practice because it focuses on application of concepts, time management and also memorizing the material which would be very difficult.
I understood after I received my AUD score and noticed as pass that my study plan is good and works out very well. Hence I followed the same for rest of my three papers, BEC, REG and FAR. I successfully able to finish all the papers in first attempt by spending only $120 per paper apart from exam fees.
Last but not the least, I owe a lot to this forum members who constantly helped me in answering all my questions. Here I would like to mention some names, I hope its not offending them. Michelle and Shama kapoor who shared their REG with me, Bobbi Johnson was very helpful through out my BEC and finally the best study buddy I got who made me to study FAR n number of times was Mirunalini. Also I cannot forget Rob's help with out which I would have failed in understanding very basics of FAR. Thank you all who have helped me in journey
