The accountant’s version of winning an Oscar: obtaining your CPA certification. At least that’s what it feels like I have just experienced – my Oscar moment. It happened when the score releases came out on August 1st…Continue
I felt compelled to title this post with a shout out to the Olympics! It's been nearly a year since I began my CPA journey. Having taken and passed 3 exams in 2013 I would have expected a little more enthusiasm and motivation on my part in studying for what I hope to be, my last exam. Unfortunately I saved the worst for last. A topic I absolutely despise, TAX.
The feelings this…Continue

It's been since Dec 5th since I've looked at anything resembling CPA exam study material. I scheduled my Audit exam for Dec. 6th which meant postponing the start of our Xmas activities by no less than 4 weeks( Xmas begins the first week of Nov for me!) - a sacrifice that was…Continue
It's been about 2 weeks now since I received my results on my last exam, FAR. With the good news I began to study for Audit. The first night went okay, I didn't really feel great about it but figured I just needed to get back into my groove. But as the next week passed things were going from bad to worse. Every time I attempted to read the text I'd doze off, shake myself awake and try again....still, something just wasn't working. Nothing was clicking; it's difficult to explain but it…Continue
Hello fellow candidates!
After a long 3 week wait I received my score for FAR today. Having checked the site throughout the day, I finally got my score at 10 min to 5. After I clicked on "score" for the 20th time, I noticed that there were no red words; I gasped and quickly clicked on another tab exclaiming loudly "my score is there!!" My coworkers were probably more excited that they wouldn't have to suffer through my complaining anymore about the scores not being…Continue
Hello fellow candidates! It was so nice to actually go to bed at a relatively normal time last night and actually get more than 5 hours of sleep! Normally I would look at the clock and think "okay, I've got 3 hours until 12:30 (a.m.) should be able to get some good study time in." It was 10:30 and I was like "YES! I'm going to sleep NOW!!). I know this won't last, but I'll enjoy while I can. Then this morning on my way to work, instead of listening to Bill Grubbs from my Lambers audio,…Continue
In just one short hour I will be leaving to take my 2nd CPA exam, FAR. I'm much more nervous about this one than I was with the first - BEC. I question whether I am prepared enough, I feel like I could use just 1 more week -- but that's a mind set that goes around and around with any exam one takes. Just one more day, one more week - then I will be ready. My plan was to answer questions until the moment I take the exam, but I've scrapped that idea and have decided to take a bit of a…Continue
Did you ever have one of those days where you just felt like giving up, when it all seems just too overwhelming and you start wondering if it will end up being a big, fat waste of time in the end? Well today is one of those days for me and maybe I shouldn't be writing a blog post on such a topic but I can't imagine I'm the only one who goes through these moments.
It's now been around 2 weeks into my study program for FAR, the novelty beginning to wear off and the family starting to feel the impact of having the cook, housekeeper, nurse, doctor, vet and shopper, go to a quarter time schedule! As I was getting ready for work this morning I could hear, in a slightly frustrated tone, "where the he*L are all my socks?!" I laughed to myself and responded "ask Hunter, he did the laundry." I've "hired" my son to help me out and while he has done a great…Continue

It's been a week into my studies for FAR. I decided to start with Government Accounting, it's an area that I haven't touched in a few years and frankly whatever I once knew about it has long since gone. In the last week I've been reminded why I don't work in government accounting; I respect anyone who chooses this as their…Continue

Although I'm not a superstitious person by nature I do tend to look for "signs" to sort of guage whether I'm on the right path or not. I think to some extent we all do it in one fashion or another. My sister, well she's a little extreme in her need for external answers, often seeking out the assistance of psychic's. I laugh (but quietly) when she…Continue
Today I decided to squeeze in some study time during my lunch hour. I began by watching a video on FASB Standards (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lLNPUDUWkSg&list=PLAF87E4335AFBFB90). Within a few moments I had to pause it, “what?!.......new codification…. hu? Oh my gosh, have I…Continue
I've purchased my multi-colored pens, highlighters and sharpie felt tip markers, mechanical pencils, lead and ring bound index cards. I've organized my binders, drawn up an ambitious study schedule with careful planning of each section. Without a formal review package yet purchased, I've gone online and downloaded various articles and bookmarked youtube videos covering the first…Continue
This is Charlene's CPA Exam Journey...
When I was young, no one believed I would earn a college degree, much less a CPA certification!
I'll never forget the look on my father's face when I told him I was quitting my job to enroll at University and that I planned to study Accounting. During a long, uncomfortable pause, I could see that he was deep…Continue
