Why procrastination is bad and how to defeat it!

Lets face it.  A lot of us are procrastinators and like to do things in the very end.  Although it worked for a lot of us in school and maybe even college, the CPA exam is a totally different beast in this regards.  Procrastination is just a terrible thing to do with regards to all 4 sections of the CPA exam.  I just want to emphasize a few points as to why it's bad and solutions on how to defeat it.

Why it's bad:

1. It encourages a lazy lifestyle.

A lot of us do indeed…

The last night before your exam?

This is more geared towards the people who have already taken an exam, but anyone is welcome to participate.  I still have a few days left until I take my first exam and this is mostly a question which will probably vary depending on your situation.  What do you do the last day before the exam?  Do you try to cram all the material and do a review?  Do you just take a practice exam or two?  Or like the picture above, do you just try to relax and try to have an overall fresh mind and try not…

Studying for Audit: Again

I am currently studying for AUD again. I plan to take the exam on May 20th. (Edit: rescheduled for August 24th) I have paid for my notice to schedule and I will need to pay my fee once that comes and schedule the exam. I will also need to request time off work!

I had stopped studying for the exam after the end of November when I got a 68 on BEC. My only weakness in taking these exams is time. I do not have difficulty with any of the material (unless you count deferred…

What made you interested in pursuing a career in accounting?

As I was going through the IT section of auditing, I had a question for myself and for other people if they want to answer.  What made you interested in accounting and why did you choose it as a profession?  I actually grew around computers and IT in general, so I've actually been very interested in that side of the…

Anyone else using Lambers......

I'm using Lamber's to study BEC and have failed it twice!  I read how everyone states BEC is the easy one of the four, but I have to beg to differ.  Part of the issue is that I waited to take CPA exam after raising kids, 18 years later, here we are.  Not a very good start!  Finding time to study is difficult.  Still have a 13 year old at home and an 18 year off to A&M in the fall.  After spending so much money on this program, not sure what to do at this point!  I will have to pay to…

KEEP CALM and STUDY ON

Did you ever have one of those days where you just felt like giving up, when it all seems just too overwhelming and you start wondering if it will end up being a big, fat waste of time in the end?  Well today is one of those days for me and maybe I shouldn't be writing a blog post on such a topic but I can't imagine…

One week until finals!

Trying to organize myself -  have two big finals in about 1 1/2 weeks!

Adv Forensic Accounting - holding a 99% in the class with 2 papers and a large final and this class will finally be over. Enjoyed more than I thought I would. But if I hear anything more about Enron I'm going to scream.

Adv Accounting - holding about 97% only because of the stupid discussion boards. Enjoyed working on the problems more.

Adv Corporate Taxation - love this class!! 99%!!! Feel bad when I…

BEC Communication

When I took the BEC portion of the CPA exam, it was important to budget your time for answering questions. When looking at the questions, look at what they are asking for. You might get a paragraph of information that has no relevance to the question at hand. Skip right to the question first (last sentence) then read the rest of it. This can help budget your time better when you are studying and taking the exam.

Good luck to all!

Mitch

Entry #4 - Can't buy me love and can't buy me time...!

Well, here I am among all you brilliant CPA Candidates....it is one of many hurdles to the CPA finish line.

In my case, I'm in my 50s starting a second career after 25 years in high-tech.  Around 2004, I went back to school at night and completed half of the requirements mostly in General Business and considering getting a masters in business finally.  However, it couldn't surpass the extensive experience I had in marketing, business development, and sales.  When I again went back to…

Last week of studying for Auditing

Hey guys.  After these last few weeks of studying and practice, only a week left until my first big CPA exam.  I'm using my time wisely to go over some of my weak areas (cycles and evidence).  Surprisingly, I felt pretty comfortable with reports, a section that I thought I would have struggled with.  I think it's mainly due to memorization being one of my strong suits.. with cycles and evidence, it's a lot more about applying and looking at the bigger picture.  Hopefully this last week I can…

Beginning the Journey in becoming a CPA

I received my Associate of Applied Science Degree in Accounting in 1983. Now after being in the workforce for over thirty years, I have found myself needing to go back to school for my Bachelors of Science in Accounting.  If I want to move up the career ladder into a management position, I need to have my BA.

As my 1st step of becoming a CPA comes to an end - getting my Bachelor of Science in Accounting. Currently finishing my last few class and will have my degree July 23rd!…

New BEC Study Plan

I’ve been plowing through BEC for a full week now and earlier in the week I was missing the comfort I had during AUD. Don’t get me wrong, I didn’t KNOW AUD, but I somewhat knew AUD. By the time I took my AUD test, the first week of April, I was ready to be done with that material and do something different. Now, I realize that different means learning something new, from the start.

Anyway, I’ve made my way through Corporate Governance and the Economic sections study plan this week. I…

Too Hard to Stay Focused

With Full Time job and Full Time family obligations, I rarely find time to study.  I tried to sneak in 30 minutes during lunch and an hour before bed but just don't make it.  My Becker review course just expired and I have 3 more courses to go.  GOD HELP ME!

Week #2 - The missing socks

It's now been around 2 weeks into my study program for FAR, the novelty beginning to wear off and the family starting to feel the impact of having the cook, housekeeper, nurse, doctor, vet and shopper, go to a quarter time schedule!  As I was getting ready for work this morning I could hear, in a slightly frustrated tone,  "where the he*L are all my socks?!"  I laughed to myself and responded "ask Hunter, he did the laundry."  I've "hired" my son to help me out and while he has done a great…

2nd Time Around: Working on BEC After Being out of School for a While

I took the CPA exam many years ago, right after college.  I didn't study at all, thinking I would "wing" it.  Of course, I failed all 4 parts.  Since I got a job in the auto industry, I didn't feel I needed a CPA designation, so I never looked back.

I switched careers about four years ago.  I work as an auditor for the government in Specialty Tax, so I feel I would benefit from obtaining the CPA designation, especially since my work experience would actually go towards getting my…

YES: NTS Received!

Wow, I remember another blogger saying how she was actually excited to get her NTS.. and now that I finally have mine (first applied on 2/27), I feel the exact same way.  That's definitely a load of stress off my back.  I have 2 sections on this NTS (AUD and FAR) and will get BEC and REG a bit later on.  Just didn't want to schedule all 4 exams in one NTS and…

Government Accounting: 5 Hour Energy and Lambers

Hello everyone.

It's been a week into my studies for FAR.  I decided to start with Government Accounting,  it's an area that I haven't touched in a few years and frankly whatever I once knew about it has long since gone.  In the last week I've been reminded why I don't work in government accounting; I respect anyone who chooses this as their…
