CPA Exam Mistake #5: Focusing On Your Strengths Instead Of Your Weaknesses

We all like to spend time at things we are good at.  We all like the positive reinforcement that comes with doing something well.  When studying on our own, the tendency is to get that positive reinforcement by working more on the areas we know well to get those impressive 90% scores and big green bars on certain topics.

Study Like a Marathon

Recently, I reflected on how I could best pass the CPA exam.  I use an app called RunDouble and what I like about it is that I don't have to "think" about what to do - the training plan is built in and I can play the music on my phone simultaneously while I run around beautiful places in my neighborhood.

So, why not make a RunDouble feature for the CPA exam, I thought?…

One of the mistakes highly motivated people make is pushing themselves too hard in studying for the exam.  To pass all 4 parts of the exam, most people will study upwards of 300 hours.  A…

Sweet Relief

I passed Reg!  I could not believe my eyes when I saw the one word that meant more than anything else in the world at the moment - PASS.  This had been my third attempt at the test.  And I had wondered if I was going to make it in to the test center two weeks before the test.

You see, my husband had been in a motorcycle accident.  It was a minor one involving mechanical failure of the bike.  We believe that the bike belt either was jammed by a rock or broke because of age.  Either way…

CPA Exam Mistake #3: Not Getting People Close To You On Your Side

Passing the CPA exam is hard and time consuming.  No newsflash there.  You all know that.

But, many of the candidates I talk to try to explain to their family and friends how hard the exam is and how time consuming it is. As much as they might want to understand, most people who are not…

Modeling for the women in our world

There have been three waves of feminism, and still - there's a SuperMom image out there as well as amazing resources and talents inside of so many women that choose instead to take on the respectful and societal-needed place of parenting and mothering our young.  If you're in that boat and have the goal to pass the CPA exam, you know it is a curvy path to success, not the quick, straight road that you were accustomed to before life became richer with loved ones nearby.

Choosing to be…

CPAexcel Success Story – Beyond the Sacrifices (Part I)

“You can get to do a million things that people will never get to do, but to do that, you have to sacrifice the 3 or 4 things that everybody gets to do.” – Drake

My exam journey is not only an individual, personal journey but it was also a family journey of 10 months. There were a lot of ups and downs, but through it all my wife, Myra, and my son, Stephen, inspired me and supported me every step of the way.

The Beginning…

FAR Post test and forward

I just took FAR three days ago, and wow, was I exhausted afterwards! Still, I felt pretty good about it, until I remembered a few wish-I-could-answer-that-one-again questions. But, these kinds thoughts keep me in the exhausted phase of the post test hangover and don't change my score. Neither do the thoughts about questions that I knew the answer and feel certain about getting right. What's important after these tests is being able to move forward to the next phase which for me is BEC. As…

Slow Start with Audit

It's been about 2 weeks now since I received my results on my last exam, FAR.  With the good news I began to study for Audit.  The first night went okay, I didn't really feel great about it but figured I just needed to get back into my groove.  But as the next week passed things were going from bad to worse.  Every time I attempted to read the text I'd doze off, shake myself awake and try again....still, something just wasn't working.  Nothing was clicking; it's difficult to explain but it…

Passing FAR

Hello fellow candidates!

After a long 3 week wait I received my score for FAR today.  Having checked the site throughout the day, I finally got my score at 10 min to 5.  After I clicked on "score" for the 20th time, I noticed that there were no red words; I gasped and quickly clicked on another tab exclaiming loudly "my score is there!!"  My coworkers were probably more excited that they wouldn't have to suffer through my complaining anymore about the scores not being…
